Wodaabe embroidered indigo garment worn by women during the Gerewol courtship festivities.
Two frontal and two dorsal wide indigo panels are filled with extremely fine chain and feather stitch embroidery.
These intricate motifs are a language of symbols alluding to aspects of Wodaabe nomadic lifestyle.
Very finely woven cotton strips of 1cm in width, is a costly and prestigious cloth, mastery of Hausa weavers from the Kano region in northern Nigeria.
The garment is completed by an indigo embroidered wrap and indigo head cloth.
Very good condition, mid 20th century.
