Description
Kasai velvet raffia cloth produced by Kuba peoples of the Kasai region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
These textiles are woven from raffia palm fibers. The fibers are harvested and softened through pounding before being woven into panels on an inclined single-heddle loom. Women then create the raised pile embroidery that forms the distinctive geometric designs. Once cut flush, the surface acquires its characteristic velvety appearance.
The patterns are created freehand, making each cloth unique. Historically, these prestige textiles were associated with royal courts and ceremonial use, and were also exchanged as valuable currency objects.
The composition displays a striking arrangement of interlocking diamond motifs in natural, black, and deep reddish-brown tones.
Very good condition with age-related wear and patina.
Circa 1960–1970.
