About the WODAABE
The Wodaabe are a nomadic subgroup of the Fulani (also known as Fula or Peul). They are pastoralists who herd cattle, goats, sheep, camels, and donkeys across the Sahel region, including parts of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic.
Life for the Wodaabe can be challenging due to drought and harsh environmental conditions. Strong cultural values—such as modesty, patience, intelligence, endurance, and loyalty—help maintain social cohesion.
Personal appearance and beauty are central to Wodaabe identity. The Guérewol Festival, held during the rainy season, is a major cultural event focused on community bonding, tradition, and courtship, reinforcing strong social unity.
