Tuareg Silver Talhakimt Tanfouk Hair Amulet, Niger

Description

This type of Tuareg hair amulet adornment or pendant is known as tanfouk or talhakimt.
The silver ring is inset with a piece of old European glass, with the band finely hand incised with a traditional pattern.
Believed to possess prophylactic powers to heal and avert the “evil eye”, these amulets are considered by the Tuareg to be powerful talismans.
Rich patina, early to mid 20th century – Collected in Niger.
