Stools in Africa are considered to be objects of prestige that define social status. Both men and women could own a stool, however, these would often be distinctive in style and design.
Amongst the Tonga, men reserve themselves the right above women to sit on a stool, should only one be available. It is however, during their marriage that the husband must give his new wife a stool as a gift. From this day, the wife’s stool will possess many important ritual connotations.
Though not large in size, these small traditional stools are very comfortable to sit on.
