Description
Old Lobi Bateba figure pendant cast in copper alloy and collected in the Gaoua region of southwestern Burkina Faso.
The pendant depicts an anthropomorphic figure seated with hands resting on the upper legs. Its simplified form and prominent facial features draw on the imagery associated with Lobi Bateba protective figures.
Among the Lobi, Bateba figures are linked to spiritual protection and are consulted through diviners and soothsayers. According to local traditions, amulets of this type may be prescribed for protection against harmful influences and are sometimes associated with the well-being of children and elders.
The pendant displays a well-developed patina consistent with age and use.
