Tuareg Leather Koran Pouch or Ettabu from Abalak, Niger

Description

This lavishly decorated Tuareg pouch or Ettabu is intended to hold the sacred scriptures of the Koran.
Extreme attention to detail and aesthetics are proof of the importance and specific function of this pouch.
All forms and techniques of adornment have been used such as cut-out leather, embroidery, hand-stamped patterns and applied decoration of sequins and beads.
The elaborate cut out design extending from the flap of the Ettabu is reminiscent of the Tuareg saddle or Tamzak and the nomadic life of the Tuareg.
At the top of the flap is a small raised box structure measuring 3 x 5 cm which may contain a sacred amulet.
Rich patina, tribal used – Collected in Abalak, Niger.
