Description

Made out of of calabashes or gourds, the Dogon have used what they find in nature to elaborate various types of containers and bowls.
Gourd plantations are scattered in the Dogon plains, and upon its harvest, the calabash emptied of the seeds and flesh contained inside, it is then dried. Later it will be elaborated into various utilitarian objects such as bowls, containers, ritual paraphernalia, etc.
Unfortunately, plastic items are slowly replacing those sourced in nature.
Shea butter is used as a cream on babies, on women’s hair and breasts, as it is greatly appreciated for its emollient properties.
These containers have been used and still retain remnants of shea butter, mid to late 20th century – Collected in the Dogon Cliffs, Mali.
