Description

Traditional Tuareg silver hoop earrings known as tizabaten, worn by Tuareg women in Niger.

Large and heavy examples such as these are worn through the earlobe or around the ear, as illustrated in the accompanying period photograph.

According to Jean Burner, tizabaten originate from the Azawagh region and more specifically from the area around Tahoua in Niger.

The adorned twelve-faceted finials, known as eraf wa n tesabit, are considered protective amulets against the evil eye. Traditionally worn by Tuareg women, tizabaten are both adornments and a form of portable wealth.

Silver alloy with good silver content, typical of traditional Tuareg work. Patina and surface wear consistent with age and use.

Collected in Niger.
