Clean simple lines characterize each of these three old Tuareg banded agate talhakimt or tanfouk amulets.
These amulets can be worn as pendants, but traditionally, they were worn a few at a time by young Tuareg men. These would create a notably striking when they hit together, intended to call the attention of young women during courtship.
*Idar-Oberstein beads are cut from Brazilian agate, the cutting and polishing of the agate was mastered by its craftspeople; beads and cut stones were produced in Germany for export to Africa, from c. 1830 up until the 1970’s.
Agate is valued by the Tuareg for its prophylactic powers and talhakimt are also worn as pendants, strung together with crosses and other pendants to create a very elaborate necklace.
Excellent condition, mid 20th century – Collected in Mali.
