Stools in Africa are considered to be objects of prestige that define social status. Both men and women could own a stool, however, these would often be distinctive in style and design.
Amongst the Tonga, men reserve themselves the right above women to sit on a stool, should only one be available.It is however, during their marriage that the husband must give his new wife a stool as a gift. From this day, the wife’s stool will possess many important ritual connotations.  
Though not large in size, these small traditional stools are very comfortable to sit on.
Tribal used, mid 20th century, markings on seat, nice patina – Collected in Zimbabwe.
