Lobi Brass Amulet Chameleon Pendant, Burkina Faso

Description

These small old Lobi brass amulets have become very difficult to find in the past few years.
Various animals are depicted and these amulets are worn around the neck by young children, protecting them from illness and sorcerers. Such amulets are highly valued by the Lobi for their protective powers.
The chameleon is a symbol of intelligence, due to its tremendous capacity to camouflage itself in its surroundings, as well as for its all round vision.

Superb criss-cross pattern and powerful cowrie-shaped eye.
Rich patina with one side more smooth as a result from rubbing against the skin.
Early to mid 20th century – Collected in Burkina Faso.
