Description
This wonderful old Lobi brass amulet bangle is surmounted by two imposing chameleons and a human head.
The Lobi of Burkina Faso are highly superstitious and wear various types of amulets.
The chameleon is appreciated as a powerful symbol of protection.
It is admired for its intelligence as it has a tremendous capacity to camouflage itself in its surroundings, and possesses all round vision. The magical powers of this amulet bracelet are further intensified by the two chameleons that flank an ancestor figure.
Bracelets of this type, on which the chameleon is represented are worn exclusively by men.
Cast by the lost wax method whereby a model is hand-shaped in beeswax, the model is then encased in clay; once cast the mold is destroyed resulting in a unique and original piece.
