Description

A strand of ancient carnelian, quartz and rock crystal tabular diamond-shaped beads.
These beads are likely Indian in origin, as trade in carnelian from Gujarat, especially from the town of Khambhat (Cambay), and parts of sub-Saharan Africa possibly did take place as early as the Middle Ages. Such an assertion is based upon visual parallels between African and Indian samples, and upon historical sources.
Beads range in size from 12 mm to 25mm in length and 10mm to 20mm in width, the strand is 66 cm (26 inches) long, excluding cotton twine.
Condition is very good with some minor chips – Collected in Mali.
