About Venetian Chevron Beads (Early 1900s)
Antique Venetian trade beads represent a rich and fascinating chapter in global trade history. Murano glassmakers began producing glass beads as early as the 1400s, continuing production into the early 1900s.
Murano artisans continued producing Venetian chevron trade beads into the early 20th century for the African trade.
Chevron beads quickly became powerful symbols of nobility, wealth, and authority among many West African ethnic groups.
Village, clan, and community chiefs wore—and still wear—these beads to express status and influence.
Collectors prize them today for their strong presence, visible wear, and rich natural patina.
