Senufo Currency Anklet (Chevillière), Ivory Coast

Price :

385.00 $

Description

A rare Senufo currency anklet (chevillière) cast in copper alloy using the lost-wax technique.
Traditionally worn by women, these substantial anklets also served as a form of wealth and social prestige within Senufo communities of West Africa.

This example displays a rich dark patina acquired through age and use.
The surface is decorated with semi-circular motifs and applied raised elements that highlight the craftsmanship of the caster.
Larger and heavier anklets such as this one are believed by some scholars to have been reserved for ceremonial occasions or for women of elevated status.

Collected in Burkina Faso.
