Description
A superb mid 20th century silver amulet or talisman from Rajasthan in northern India.
This cylinder shaped talisman is profusely adorned, displaying exquisite craftsmanship. Traditionally, amulet containers were intended to contain, protect and preserve their magical contents.
On this amulet, one of the ringed caps can be removed, as it once contained mystical formulae inscribed on paper (mantras) or could even contain small objects with magical protective powers.
The form of an amulet is determined by local and cultural customs, as well as the type of magical content it is intended to hold. It is usually the central amulet amongst other elements of a necklace.
Talismans or amulets are distinguished by their material as well as by their ornamentation.
