Forowa can be described as the more modest form of container used to hold gold dust powder.
Gold powder was, as early as the 15th century the established form of currency in the Gold Coast empire.
The monetary system was largely based on gold and a paraphernalia of equipment, such as gold weights, scales, spoons, etc. were used to weigh gold powder and nuggets.
This lidded sheet brass circular forowa from the early 20th century, is decorated with a geometric design and repoussé centre knob.
